Independent Living

ELIGIBILITY
All persons within our service area of Butler, Carter, Ripley, Wayne and surrouding counties, regardless of disability, are eligible to receive our services. There is NO COST for many our services and no risk of losing any benefits as a result (i.e.) Social Security, Disability Income, Medicaid, VA benefits, SSI. ALL consumer information is confidential.

HOW TO OBTAIN SERVICES
Call or come by the Independent Living Center and make an appointment.

  • An Independent Living Specialist will interview you and assist you in developing an Independent Living Plan.

  • Methods and steps to achieve those goals will be put into place.

INFORMATION AND REFERRAL

  • Provides answers to questions relating to any disability issue.

  • Maintains a resource library for consumer use.

  • Referral to appropriate agency/agencies to address needs related to his/her challenges.

ADVOCACY

  • Education advocacy (IEP support, legal rights and appropriate accommodations).

  • Informing the public of issues concerning the disabled.

  • Informing legislators of facts relevant to pending disability legislation.

  • Encouraging active participation in the political process (voting, writing congressmen).

  • Access issues (e.g.)physical barriers, cultural barriers, employment barriers.

  • Increase public awareness of disability issues.

SKILLS TRAINING

Any skill needed to relearn or learn to increase the level of independence could be included in the Independent Living plan. An Independent Living Specialist will assist with setting goals and developing a plan of action with benchmarks to achieve those goals. The process will provide the opportunity for individuals to learn necessary skills and develop resources, technology, and adaptations.

PEER SUPPORT

  • Offers individuals opportunity to meet persons with similar challenges.

  • Offers support groups to help educate and meet challenges.

  • Peer to peer networking program where you can be match to another individual with the same or similar disability and network with that person in a one to one setting.

TRANSITION

  • Assist residents of nursing homes or other institutions move into community-based housing.

  • Assist with information and resources to prevent people being placed in institutions.

  • Helps youth with disabilities transition to an independent adult life.
